Very easy to understand, step by step instructions January 18, 2007 Elaine J. Eddington (Ft Carson, CO United States) 47 out of 48 found this review helpful
Just a note, you get this book free when you sign up to take the Wilton Cake Class Course 1 (at least you do at Michael's Arts & Crafts where I took mine)
The book is easy to understand, pictures are literally step by step and include instruction such as "offhand," meaning it will tell you that something should resemble an ice cream cone or look like a behive, to swirl here, or lightly brush here, sweeping motion, etc. I found it very refreshing not to all be spoken in terms that only people who attended culinary school would understand. It also shows you the pictures of suggested supplies you will need in the beginning of the book so your not running back to the store each time you start a new segment.
I would suggest just taking the class because on top of getting the book free, you do get a lot more tips and advice from the instructor that you can jot down in the ample space imbetween pictures and notes in the book. But if you too busy or there isn't a class scheduled near you, this book would certainly suffice in helping you get started!
Wilton course 1 book January 17, 2007 Darkeyes (US) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
If you are like me unable to take Wilton course 1 class or just want to get a head start before taking the class. This book is a great investment for you. All the method taught in course 1 class are given here with step by step color picture. If you don't are unable to master the skills that is fine, just practice and practice you will be ok (I suggest you use a large flat dinner plate instead of the practice board, its much easier to clean up or re-use the buttercream).
I learned how to make butter cream roses and shells thanks to this book in addition to wilton's website video. I suggest everyone to invest on this book (you can always sell it later if you no longer want it).
Free with the class! December 7, 2008 B. Sumner (New England) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
The course book itself is great for beginners or those needing a refresher. it's step by step and has some great ideas as well.
Hint: Don't buy the "kits" they sell. Instead, take your 50% off coupon from ACMoore or Michaels and go buy the 101 piece set with caddy. It's normally $144, but only $72 after the coupon. Then all you'll need to buy for the rest of the courses is a couple of tips and a few cake pans (which you should also purchase with coupons). The big tool set comes with flavorings and colors.. and if you add up everything in the caddy you'd spend over $300 for all that comes with it.
Also please make sure you realize before taking the class that you don't just show up. There's a ton of prep for each class with making frostings and cakes at home. I suggest you make all of your cakes at the same time, then freeze so you save time.
cake decorating Course I Discover Cake Decorsting September 13, 2008 EMMA A. GATMAITAN 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I study baking few months ago, then I also study cake decorating to complete my course. The Cake Decorating Course I - Discover cake decorating is very informative. What I learn in cake decorating is also equally important just like my formal training in school. It helped me a lot even in choosing tips to decorate and the style of the flowers are fantastic! Thank you.
